I just found an old sketchbook from my Japan trip to Tokyo and Sapporo in 2014. Here are a few culinary highlights.

Je viens tout juste de retrouver un carnet contenant des croquis de mon voyage à Tokyo et Sapporo en 2014. Voici quelques délicatesses appréciées et croquées en chemin.

There is a small spelling mistake on that one: this sweet drink made from fermented rice is called amazake, not amasake…

Une erreur s’est glissée dans ce dessin : cette boisson sucrée à base de riz fermenté s’écrit avec un Z, amazake et non amasake…

It’s with a certain nostalgia for summer and our (already swallowed up) honey harvest that I publish here these few images of the beehives in the back of my yard.

C’est avec une certaine nostalgie de l’été et de notre récolte de miel (engloutie !) que je publie ici ces quelques images des ruches du fond de mon jardin.

Martin’s Volcanic Margins … The Cover Boy of the New VOGUE

My friend Martin just defended with some brio his PhD on the magmatic-tectonic interactions in Central Afar, Ethiopia, a region he spent some time discovering during extended field research stays. This cover of Vogue completes the series of tongue-in-cheek geological illustrations I posted regularly on this blog over the past year. This time I simply chose a more glamorous magazine that suited my friend’s aura better than a Nature or Science cover would have…

Mon ami Martin vient de soutenir sa thèse sur les interactions magmato-tectoniques en Afar central, Ethiopie, avec un certain brio — une région qu’il a découverte durant des séjours prolongés de recherche de terrain. Cette couverture de Vogue vient compléter une série d’illustrations géologiques doucement ironiques que j’ai publiées régulièrement sur ce blog l’année passée. Cette fois mon choix s’est porté sur un magazine un peu plus glamour qu’un Nature ou Science, afin qu’il corresponde au mieux à l’aura de mon camarade…

Unveiling my submission to this year’s Novo Doba Festival (go visit their website/facebook page!) that will take place for the sixth year running in Belgrade/Pančevo/Zemun, Serbia, at the end of the month under the motto “Šta nam rade . . . — These Things They Do To Us.” What are your associations & mental connections with this title? & with my drawings?

Je vous dévoile ma contribution annuelle au festival de bande-dessinée Novo Doba qui aura lieu à Belgrade/Pančevo/Zemun en Serbie (allez donc voir leur site / page facebook !) ces jours-ci, et qui pour cette 6e édition a comme thème : “Šta nam rade . . . — Ces choses qu’ils nous font.” Quelles sont les associations d’idée qui vous viennent à l’esprit face à ce titre ? et face à mes dessins ?

Do you remember this strange bird? I eventually dyed it with walnut stain, added some white and gray acryl paint and polished the whole table top with a wax of my own making.

Vous souvenez-vous de ce drôle d’oiseau ? Je l’ai enfin teinté au brou de noix, ai ajouté des aplats de peinture acrylique blanche et grise, et j’ai ciré le plateau de la table avec un encaustique de ma fabrication.

Rustic “encaustique”: 1/3 beeswax from your honeybees, 1/3 turpentine, 1/3 linseed oil — makes for a great furniture polish

J’ai aussi utilisé cet encaustique pour cirer un cadre.

I just spent an intense week full of doodling, drawing, portraying and listening to scientific talks at the Goldschmidt Conference in Prague, where I was invited to be their 1st Artist-in-Residence. Artist Residency in Prague!

As you are reading these lines, I am readying myself and packing my things to leave for Prague. I have been invited to participate in the Goldschmidt Conference to be their first artist in residence! What does it consist of? Well, I will be spending a whole week in a beautiful Central European capital mingling with geochemists — a very special breed of geologists — and also: I simply get to spend a few days drawing, drawing and … drawing! I will be going to talks, sketching and portraying the people I meet there, presenting some of my artwork related to geological fieldtrips and most probably enjoying the view. I also intend to continue my series of cover illustrations of famous scientific journals posted here a couple months back, for which I will certainly find new inspiration in Prague among the 4000+ participants…

I will be publishing “A Doodle A Day. The Graphic Proceedings of the Goldschmidt Conference” on the conference’s blog (http://blog.eag.eu.com/goldschmidt2015/) everyday. Go have a look at it during the week if you’re intrigued!

If you scroll down a bit you will see a few sketches I made in Prague’s old town during my last stay back in 2011. I remember being enthralled by the caryatids and atlantes carrying all the weight of the Czech neo-Baroque architecture on their stone shoulders. I am looking forward to discovering some more…

Au moment où vous lisez ces lignes, je rassemble mes effets et m’apprête à partir pour Prague. J’ai été invitée à participer à la Goldschmidt Conference afin d’y être leur première artiste en résidence ! Alors en quoi cela consiste-t-il ? Eh bien, cela signifie que je vais passer une semaine entière à me mêler à une foule de géochimistes — une espèce très intéressante de géologues — et aussi à dessiner, dessiner et surtout : dessiner ! Je compte aller à des exposés, faire des esquisses et des portraits des gens que j’y rencontre, présenter mon travail graphique en lien avec des missions de terrain géologiques auxquelles j’ai participées et très probablement … profiter de la vue. J’ai aussi l’intention de continuer ma série de unes de journaux scientifiques célèbres que j’avais postée ici il y a quelques mois et pour laquelle je vais certainement trouver quelque inspiration parmi les 4000 participants…
